|Dermal fillers are used to increase volume of certain areas of the face or to help smooth uneven facial surfaces such as those containing wrinkle or crease lines. Tiny injections of varying formulas are made into the facial area of choice to achieve this desired effect.
At Kuy Plastic Surgery, we offer three different types of facial fillers. The hyaluronic acid based fillers mentioned below contain hyaluronic acid—a substance that occurs naturally in your skin functioning to increase hydration and produce volume. All of our facial fillers utilize some component of the skin’s natural ability to increase in volume, and are safe and effective.
Dr. Kuy will help determine the best formula for you!
Of all hyaluronic acid based fillers, Restylane has been been on the market the longest. It is tried and true in facial applications and therefore is used as a control whenever studies are done on new fillers.
The results are immediate with Restylane, and there is little risk of lumps and bumps, as it is a smooth substance. Its versatility allows for it to be used almost anywhere on the face. Common applications are lip augmentation and the filling of deep folds around the lips.
A touchup treatment is common 4-6 months after the first one, extending the duration of the fullness effect for up to 18 months. Bruising and swelling may occur at the injection sites but is usually mild and not long lasting.
Patients receiving an injection of Restylane may be advised to temporarily stop taking all medications and supplements that increase the risk of bleeding.
Juvederm Ultra, Ultra Plus & Voluma
Juvederm is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler with the consistency of smooth gel. It is injected beneath the skin to restore facial volume and instantly correct facial wrinkles and folds. It can also be used to augment the lips, add volume to the cheeks and areas around the eyes that have become sunken in.
Juvederm® is the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler proven safe and effective for darker skin tones.
Three formulas of Juvederm® are available – Juvederm® Ultra, effective in contouring and volumizing moderate facial wrinkles and folds; Juvederm®Ultra Plus, used to correct deeper folds and wrinkles; and Juvederm® XC containing lidocaine, beneficial for its drastic reduction in pain associated with injection.
Recovery time is minimal. Patients may experience bruising and swelling, and sometimes pain at the site of injection, all of which is only temporary. The effects often last 9 months to one year.
Radiesse® wrinkle filler is the longest lasting of our facial fillers, and is unique in that it utilizes the body’s natural process of collagenesis to restore facial volume.
This FDA approved filler consists of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-base gel which is injected into the skin and works beneath the skin’s surface to stimulate production of your own collagen. The procedure is minimally invasive and very effective in smoothing wrinkle lines, crease and fold lines, and returning facial fullness lost with aging. It may also be used to treat acne scars. The results may last for a year or more.
